SUMO NEWS OF THE WORLD!!
When my children were between “toddler” and baby stage, better than 12 years ago, I was struggling on a Sunday to find something on television that would capture their attention. I happened upon Sumo on ESPN. They were mesmorized!!
At first it was for the same reason that I was “glued” to the TV as well. And that reason was because it looked like fat guys, fighting in diapers. But, after 5 minutes all of that changed!! Even my children as young as they were, saw the honor, athleticism, and drama and just knew it was a “world class” sport!!
I haven’t seen much Sumo on TV in the U.S. over the last few years but, Sumo is an absolutely FASCINATING combat sport!!! I dare anyone and everyone to give Sumo a few mintues!! And NOT be into it!!
Later on I became friends with a man byt the name of Tonga Fafita. You’d know him as former WWE/WWF/WCW star King Tonga or Meng pictured here
Anyone in the Pro Wrestling industry that know’s him, will tell you that he is the strongest and probably one of the toughest men in the history of the sport! They will also tell you that, there aren’t many men in the world that live by the “code of honor” that Tonga does! There is not a more devout family man in the world nor a man that gives everyone respect as a human being until you prove him wrong as Tonga!! After I got to know Tonga and how he left his Polynesian home at the age of 14 to train and compete for Sumo, was when I realized that to be the type of man that he is, which is the type of man anyone would be proud to become, probably had a lot to do with his Sumo experience!! I mean, how couldn’t it as he was fully submerged in the culture and training during the most formidable years in a male’s development!!
When we talked about putting this site together Sumo was definately going to be a part of. Because of the reasons above but, also because, there are not a lot of resources in regard to Sumo in English. We’re hoping to become one the main sources for Sumo in English on the internet.
